About Tim Wakefield


Tim's Personal Life

Tim Wakefield is a 7th generation Oldham Countian, born and raised on the Wakefield family farm, just south of Crestwood. He graduated from Oldham County High School in 1985. 

Tim has been married to his high school sweetheart, Terri, for 34 years. They still live on the family farm, where they raised their three children, Justin, Scott, and Sarah, and are proud grandparents of Brayden and Clara. 
Tim is still a very active farmer, hunting dog trainer and outdoorsman. He is a member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Central Kentucky Hunting Retriever Association, the Inducky Hunting Retriever Club, and the Hunting Retriever Club, Inc.  He has served on the Board of Directors, both locally and nationally, for several of these groups and assisted with organizing, coordinating and chairing local and national events. He has also worked closely with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, serving on advisory committees, assisting in regulation changes, and enhancing sportsman’s access to the states many Wildlife Management Areas.
Tim is also very active in supporting the local community. He is currently serving on the Oldham County Ag Economic Development Council, the South Oldham Fire Department Board of Directors (serving on the personnel board), and the Floydsburg Cemetery Board of Directors.

Tim's Education And Experience In Public Service

After graduating from Oldham County High School, Tim spent a year at Eastern Kentucky University, and then transferred to the University of Louisville, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Police Administration in 1992. 

​Tim began his career as a public servant in 1990 at the Oldham County Jail. After a month he was hired by the LaGrange Police Department as a patrol officer, and graduated from the Department of Criminal Justice Training Police Academy in June of that year. 

In 1991 Tim was hired by the Oldham County Police as a patrol officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1997, and then Lieutenant in 1999. During his time as Lieutenant, Tim became only the second member of the Oldham County Police to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, completing Graduate courses in Community Policing, Media Relations, and Managing Organizational Change and Development.

In May of 2002, Tim was appointed to the position of
Chief of the Oldham County Police, serving the department in that capacity until the beginning of 2003, when he was reassigned to his rank of lieutenant. During all this time, he was a member of the Special Response Team (SWAT), rising to the position of Team Commander. He also became a collision reconstructionist, and the primary investigator of all serious injury/fatal collisions that occurred in the county.


For the next 12 years, Tim served the department as Operations Commander, being promoted to the rank of Major twice. During this time, he was involved in all aspects of the department including:
  • Developing, presenting, and managing departmental budgets.
  • Overseeing Work Force Deployment, and overtime management.
  • Managing departmental growth, including recruitment, hiring, and equipment purchases.
  • Implementing and supervising the School Resource Officer Program for Oldham County Schools from its creation until his retirement.
  • Coordinating all departmental training, and attained numerous Police Instructor Certifications, to include Police Firearms, Taser, Defensive Tactics, and is a CCDW instructor.
  • Securing and administering numerous grants and funding programs for the department.
  • Developing and assisting in numerous community programs, including IronMan, Oldham County Day Festivities, Mini Triathlons, 5k’s, and numerous others 
  • Coordinating with other law enforcement and state agencies to administer federal and local programs to keep our community safe

Tim Retired from the Oldham County Police in July of 2015. Since then he has been serving as a deputy for the Trimble County Sheriff’s Office.

Knowing he would pursue the office of Oldham County Sheriff upon Steve Sparrows retirement, Tim has spent the last six years
learning every aspect of running a sheriff’s office in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
